Viair 300P review
The 300P is the compressor we would buy with our own money if we owned one truck and did everything with it. It filled our 205/55R16 test tire from 28 to 36 PSI in 1:02 — second fastest of the 22 units on our bench, beaten only by a Milwaukee M18 running off a tool battery — held ±1.0 PSI against our calibrated reference, and moved 1.4 CFM at 90 PSI, which is comfortably the most usable airflow of any compressor at this price. It has lived in a truck bed for months and still looks new. There is a reason it is the default answer at every trailhead in North America.

On the bench
Three timed runs from 28 to 36 PSI gave a median of 1:02. That is roughly four times faster than the accessory-socket pumps most drivers own. On a 33-inch off-road tire, going from a trail pressure of 15 PSI back to a street 35, the 300P takes about three minutes per corner — four corners is a fifteen-minute stop, not the half-hour saga a small pump turns it into.
Gauge accuracy came in at ±1.0 PSI worst-case across checks at 20, 32, and 50 PSI against our calibrated digital reference. Unlike cheaper analog dials it does not read systematically high — the error is scatter, not bias, so you can trust it without applying a correction. Airflow is the headline. Viair rates the 300P at 2.30 CFM free-flow; at the chuck against 90 PSI of back pressure we measured 1.4 CFM. Losing 40% to back pressure is normal — losing 80%, as some dual-cylinder budget units do, is not. Noise measured 86 dB at one meter at working pressure. It is loud, in the way that a metal cylinder running at 150 PSI is always loud. Ear protection is unnecessary for a four-tire session; conversation is not happening.
Duty cycle and the rest-break math
Viair rates the 300P at 33% duty at 100 PSI: run it fifteen minutes, rest it thirty. That rating is quoted at 100 PSI, which is honest of them — most manufacturers quote duty at a flattering low pressure. On car and truck tires at 35–45 PSI you will effectively never hit the limit, because a full set of four takes under seven minutes of runtime.
High-pressure work is where the ceiling appears. On our RV protocol — an ST225/75R15 trailer tire taken from 80 to 100 PSI — the 300P averages 2:10 per tire, and after two tires it needs a rest before it will hold that pace. On a tandem-axle trailer that means two-on, one break, two-on. Workable, and plenty of RV owners do exactly this. Design and usability
At 8.9 lb the 300P is a two-hand carry, and it ships in a zippered nylon bag holding the compressor, coiled hose, power leads, and nozzles. The bag is not an afterthought — it is why this unit survives a season in a truck bed without the hose kinking or the gauge cracking.
The number that matters more than the weight is 25 feet of combined hose and cord reach. Clamped to the battery of a full-size crew cab, the 300P reaches all four corners without being moved. That sounds trivial until you have done it the other way: unclamping, walking the compressor around a truck on a slope, and re-clamping with dirty hands, four times.
Power is alligator clamps to the battery posts. The 300P pulls roughly 30 amps at pressure, so a cigarette-lighter plug is not merely inconvenient here, it is a fire risk — this is why the whole portable compressor class uses clamps. Run the engine while you work. There is a thermal cut-out that will stop the motor rather than cook it, and in our testing it engaged only once, at the tail end of a deliberately abusive six-tire high-pressure run.
Everything is manual: a power switch, a gauge, a bleed valve on the chuck for letting air back out. No auto shut-off, no display, no presets. That is a fair trade for a machine with no electronics to fail, but if you want set-and-forget targets, pair the 300P with a small digital inflator for daily top-ups.
Who it's for — and who should skip it
Buy the 300P if you air down and back up regularly, run tires from 31 to 37 inches, tow anything, or want one compressor that handles the truck, the trailer, and the neighbour's flat without complaint. It is the pick in best tire inflators for trucks and a podium finisher in our overall ranking, and the long-term durability is the part that does not show up in a spec sheet: brass fittings, a replaceable filter, and a motor that has not slowed measurably in our ownership.
Who should skip it: sedan and crossover drivers. If your tires are 205- to 235-section and live at 33 to 36 PSI, the 300P is genuinely wasted money and a nuisance to store — a 12V unit that plugs into the dash does the monthly top-up without opening the hood. Skip it too if you need a compressor that runs continuously for high-pressure fleet or RV work; the 33% duty is a real limit and the 450P exists for that reason. And skip it if the budget is tight and your tires are 33 inches or smaller: the Viair 88P does the same job more slowly for meaningfully less.
Viair 300P vs Viair 88P
The 88P fills our test tire in 1:38 to the 300P's 1:02, tops out at 120 PSI instead of 150, delivers 0.8 CFM at 90 PSI against 1.4, and carries a 25% duty rating quoted at just 30 PSI. It also weighs half as much (4.5 lb) and has a notably shorter reach. Neither is a bad compressor; they are sized for different jobs.
Our line: 33-inch tires and occasional airing, the 88P is the sane purchase.
