Portable air compressors

When a glovebox inflator meets a 35-inch off-road tire or a 100 PSI RV tire, it either stalls, overheats, or takes twenty minutes per corner. Portable air compressors are the class built for that job: larger motors, metal cylinders, alligator clamps that connect straight to the vehicle battery, and duty cycles long enough to air up four truck tires in one session.

The trade-offs are real — they're heavier (4–12 lb), need the engine running, and cost more. If you drive a sedan or crossover, a standard 12V inflator is the better buy. If you tow, overland, or drive anything with load-range E tires, this is your category.

The Viair ladder — and where to step on

Viair 88P

Entry point. Tires up to 33″. Clamps to battery, no permanent install.

120 PSI1.47 CFM4.5 lb

Viair 300P

The overlander favorite — 33% duty at 100 PSI, coil hose, carry bag.

150 PSI2.30 CFM33% duty

Viair 450P

Continuous duty. Airs 37″ tires and full RV corners without resting.

150 PSI100% dutyRV-ready

Budget alternative: the GSPSCN dual-cylinder delivers surprising volume for around half the Viair price, with the build-quality caveats we detail in the review. Deciding between the two small Viairs? Read Viair 88P vs 300P.

Specs that actually matter here

CFM at pressure, not free-flow. Marketing CFM is measured at 0 PSI. A unit that moves 2.3 CFM free-flow may deliver barely 1 CFM at 90 PSI — the number that determines how long you stand next to an RV tire. Our reviews report flow at working pressure; the theory is in PSI, CFM & duty cycle explained.

Duty cycle. A 33%-duty compressor runs 15 minutes, then rests 30. Fine for one truck; painful for a trailer with duals. For RVs, continuous-duty is worth every dollar — see best RV tire inflators and how to inflate RV tires for procedure.

Power connection. Above roughly 15 amps, cigarette-lighter plugs melt. Real compressors use battery clamps; that's a feature, not an inconvenience.
