Speed: 85 seconds a tire

4:10 against 5:35 is a 34% advantage to the AstroAI, about six minutes across four corners. Both are socket-powered, which caps them near 180 watts whatever the box claims, so this is a comparison between the two best members of a slow class, not a race. The units that fill in a minute clamp to the battery or run off a tool pack; if the six minutes genuinely bothers you, the honest answer is cordless versus 12V, not the other socket pump.

Accuracy: the AstroAI's real trophy

The AstroAI's gauge came in at ±0.5 PSI at 20, 32 and 50 PSI — joint best on our entire bench, alongside two Milwaukee cordless units that cost many times more. That is the genuinely surprising result of this comparison and the reason the AstroAI heads our main tire inflator ranking rather than merely our budget one.

The EPAuto's ±1.0 PSI is not a failure. It's better than most of the field, and it's a long way from the units that ruin this category: our worst offender read 4 PSI high and wandered 2 PSI between runs. A 1 PSI error is inside the noise of a normal cold-versus-warm reading. If you're setting 35 and getting 34 or 36, no tire notices. Build, noise and the pressure ceiling

Neither feels expensive, because neither is. The AstroAI has a brighter backlit screen, a better LED work light for roadside use in the dark, and stores its ball and inflatable adapters in the body. The EPAuto is 0.3 lb lighter and slightly more compact, with a short power cord that is its most irritating limitation — on anything longer than a sedan you'll be reaching.

At 72 dB against 77 the AstroAI is meaningfully quieter; 5 dB is roughly the difference between a conversation being possible and not. It was quiet enough to make our quiet inflator picks, which the EPAuto was not.

The pressure ceiling is the one specification that can rule the EPAuto out entirely. 70 PSI covers every car, crossover and SUV placard and most half-ton trucks. It does not cover trailer tires at 80 PSI, RV tires at 100, or road bikes — the AstroAI's 150 PSI rating does, though a socket pump filling a road tire is a 2:40 affair with a Presta adapter. Value: the price-gap rule

Both units swing in price constantly, which is why a rule beats a recommendation. Check both on the day. If the AstroAI is within about $10, buy it — you're paying a few dollars for the speed, the tighter gauge, the quieter motor and the higher ceiling, and that's a bargain. FAQ

Is the AstroAI really as accurate as a Milwaukee?

On our gauge check, yes — ±0.5 PSI at 20, 32 and 50 PSI, joint best on the bench with the Milwaukee M12 and M18. Accuracy and speed are separate problems, and cheap inflators lose on speed, not necessarily on the gauge.

Does the EPAuto's 70 PSI ceiling matter for a car?

No. Passenger-car placards run 30–41 PSI and light trucks rarely exceed 50. The ceiling only rules the EPAuto out for trailer tires, RV tires, and road bikes.

Can either run four tires back to back?

Not comfortably. Both are rated for about 10 minutes before they need to rest, which covers two car tires. Do a full set in two sessions, or step up to a battery-clamp compressor.

Which is better for an emergency trunk kit?

Either — favour whichever is cheaper on the day. An inflator that lives in a trunk for five years is judged on reliability, not on 85 seconds.
