The Milwaukee M12 matches it for accuracy and beats it comfortably on speed at 1:08, but only makes sense if you are on — or joining — the M12 battery platform.
A digital inflator makes one promise: dial a number, walk away, come back to a tire at that pressure. Testing it takes two separate measurements, and most reviews do only the first. Gauge accuracy asks whether the display tells the truth about a pressure that already exists. Preset accuracy asks whether the pump stops where it says it will — a different question, because auto-stop means reading pressure while air is still moving. We ran both on every unit here, and the results are the ranking.

Against our calibrated reference at 20, 32, and 50 PSI its worst deviation was half a PSI — joint best of the 22 models we have measured, and the only unit at this price to manage it. Its preset landed at a true 36.3 PSI when set to 36, with a 0.4 PSI spread across three runs. An honest display plus a preset that respects it is what a digital inflator is for.
Using it is as undemanding as the numbers suggest: the preset holds between sessions, so a one-car driver sets 36 once and never touches the buttons again, and the work light points at the valve rather than the pump. Its constraints are the ones we publish everywhere — 12V socket only, 4:10 to add 8 PSI, a 10-minute duty cycle. None are accuracy problems.

Milwaukee calls its auto-stop TrueFill, and on our bench it earns the name. Set to 36 PSI it stopped at a true 36.4 across three runs, matching the AstroAI's ±0.5 PSI worst-case gauge error. What separates it is the speed around that measurement: it fills in 1:08 rather than 4:10 without the pressure sensor losing the plot, which is the harder engineering problem. Fast pumps overshoot because pressure is still climbing when the motor cuts; the M12 anticipates it.
The M12 is the pick if you already own the batteries or expect to; kitted with battery and charger it becomes a serious purchase and the platform question dominates. It stops at 120 PSI, plenty for cars and light trucks but not RV tires, and the build is jobsite-grade — ours has met concrete more than once without complaint.

The X8 Apex has the nicest interface here — bright display, a rotary control that steps in single PSI, five presets — and it stopped at a true 36.8 PSI when asked for 36. That eight-tenths overshoot was consistent in direction across all three runs, which makes it easy to live with: set 35, land on 36. What you cannot do is treat the display as a reference instrument, since its worst-case gauge error is a full PSI.
In exchange you get a unit needing no socket and no platform: USB-C charging and seven complete 28→36 PSI fills per charge. At 3:55 it is quicker than the AstroAI despite being a fraction of the size, and at 70 dB one of the quietest we have measured. The sealed battery is the class-wide caveat.

The cheapest way into accurate cordless auto-stop. The P737D's gauge held ±1.0 PSI and its preset stopped at a true 37.0 when set to 36 — the largest overshoot among our picks, but repeatable enough that setting one PSI low is right every time. It filled our test tire in 1:47, within striking distance of the Milwaukee for a fraction of the bare-tool price.
The compromises are hardware, not electronics: consumer-grade plastic where Milwaukee uses reinforced composite, 81 dB, and a hose short enough that positioning matters on a long vehicle. For a homeowner already on ONE+, none of that outweighs the price.

The budget end of digital done properly. Its gauge came in at ±1.0 PSI, genuinely good at this price, and it is the only pick that stops low rather than high: set to 36, it cut out at a true 35.0 every run. A conservative failure mode, easily managed — set 37 — but the preset is a guide rather than a promise.
Everything else is budget-typical: 5:05 to add 8 PSI, a 90 PSI ceiling that rules out light truck and RV tires, and a motor that tells you where the money did not go. Four nozzles, a work light, and a usable case come in the box. Buy it if the alternative is no digital inflator at all.

How we tested
Two tests, run separately. For gauge accuracy we bring a mounted 205/55R16 tire to a known pressure, verify it with a calibrated digital reference, and compare each inflator's reading at 20, 32, and 50 PSI; the worst deviation is what we publish. For preset accuracy we deflate the same tire to 28 PSI, set the target to 36, run to auto-stop, then measure immediately with the reference gauge — three runs each, and the "stopped at" column is their mean. The two matter separately because they fail independently: a pump can read a static pressure perfectly and still overshoot, its sensor chasing a moving target while the motor pushes air, and a unit can stop reliably at whatever number its own miscalibrated gauge believes — which is how a tire ends up 4 PSI light. FAQ
Does a digital gauge mean an accurate gauge?
No. Digital only means the number is displayed as digits. The worst gauge on our bench, the Hausbell, has a digital readout and was 4 PSI high at 50 PSI while wandering 2 PSI between identical runs. Accuracy comes from the sensor and its calibration, not the display type.
Why does my inflator stop above the pressure I set?
Because pressure is still rising when the sensor triggers and the motor coasts to a stop. Most units overshoot slightly but consistently — the Fanttik X8 Apex by 0.8 PSI, the Ryobi by 1.0 — so set your target that much lower.
How do I check my own inflator's accuracy?
Compare it against a quality stick or digital gauge on the same tire, at the same temperature, within a minute, at two or three pressures. Note the offset and correct for it. Every model's measured error is tabulated in how accurate are inflator gauges.
Will an inflator's reading match my car's TPMS?
Rarely exactly. TPMS sensors sit inside a warm tire and most systems round to the nearest PSI or report with a lag, so a 1–2 PSI difference against a cold reading at the valve is normal. A persistent larger gap means one of the two is wrong — see the TPMS guide.
