Milwaukee M12 inflator, tested

This is the cordless inflator we hand to people who want one recommendation and no follow-up questions. The M12 filled our reference 205/55R16 from 28 to 36 PSI in 1:08 — beaten on our bench only by its own larger sibling — and its TrueFill auto-stop landed within half a PSI of our calibrated digital reference on every single run, at 20, 32, and 50 PSI. Nothing else that weighs 2.6 lb comes close on either count. The catch is not the tool. It is the platform: the M12 makes sense at a bare-tool price and starts looking expensive the moment you have to buy into batteries you will not otherwise use.

The 1:08 figure is a median of three runs on the same mounted tire, and the spread between the fastest and slowest run was under four seconds — a consistency almost nothing in the budget class manages. Accuracy is where this tool separates itself. We set TrueFill to 36 PSI, let it stop on its own, then read the tire with the reference gauge. Every run came back between 35.6 and 36.4 PSI. Set it to 50 and it still held the half-PSI band, which is more than we can say for the DeWalt DCC020IB, whose gauge drifted a full PSI high at that pressure. Battery life is the honest weak spot in the numbers. Four complete 28→36 PSI fills from a 4Ah pack means one full set of tires and nothing in reserve. That is fine for the monthly top-up this tool is built for; it is not enough for a trailhead airing-up session, where you want the M18 or a clamp-fed compressor instead. Nudging four tires up two or three PSI each — the actual common job — barely dents the pack.

At 78 dB it is loud enough that you will not want it running next to a sleeping baby, but it is a well-behaved noise: a steady mid-frequency whirr rather than the rattling clatter of a cheap dual-cylinder unit. Only the Makita, at 74 dB, is quieter among tool-battery inflators.

Design and usability

The M12 is roughly the size of a large coffee thermos with a battery on the bottom, and it stands up on its own without tipping when the hose is under tension — a small thing that matters when you are crouched at a wheel. Controls are three buttons and a backlit display: up, down, and start/stop. There is no mode menu to learn, no unit-cycling puzzle, no app.

The hose is a stiff braided line about two feet long with a screw-on brass chuck. Screw-on is slower than a lever chuck but it does not leak while you walk away, which is the entire point of an auto-stop inflator. The hose and the cord for the included Schrader needle and inflation nozzles tuck into a moulded recess on the body — after two years of ours living loose in a truck door pocket, the retainer still holds.

Two annoyances worth stating. First, the 120 PSI ceiling is the lowest of the tool-battery group, and while the tool will genuinely reach it, filling anything above about 60 PSI is slow going; RV and trailer work belongs to a proper high-PSI unit. Second, the display is not visible from directly above, so on a low sports-car wheel you end up kneeling to read it.

The bare-vs-kit math, honestly

Almost every complaint about M12 inflator value is really a complaint about buying a first M12 battery. As a bare tool it is regularly one of the better-value items in cordless inflation; as a kit with a battery and charger it costs meaningfully more, and at that point a self-contained USB-C unit or a good 12V pump does the same monthly job for less money.

The way we score it: if you already own one M12 battery, buy the bare tool and stop reading. If you own none but expect to buy other M12 tools — the platform has a genuinely deep compact-tool range — the kit is a reasonable entry point and the battery is not wasted. If you will never own another M12 tool, you are paying a platform tax for a tire pump, and the honest answer is the ranking in best inflators under $100. Who it's for — and who should skip it

Buy it if you are already on M12, if you top up four tires monthly and resent how long a 12V pump takes, or if gauge accuracy is the thing you actually care about. It is also the easiest inflator in this class to hand to someone who does not enjoy tools: set number, press start, walk away.

Who should skip it: anyone with no Milwaukee batteries and no plans to buy any, anyone whose tires live above 60 PSI — trucks on load-range E, trailers, motorhomes — and anyone who needs to air up a full set of 33-inch tires in one session. Those buyers want the M18, a Viair, or, at the budget end, the plug-in units in our under-$50 ranking.

Versus its main rivals

Against the DeWalt DCC020IB, the M12 wins speed (1:08 to 1:21), accuracy (±0.5 to ±1.0), and weight by more than two pounds; the DeWalt wins on versatility, because it also runs from a 12V socket or a wall outlet and has a real high-volume mode.
