Is it safe to leave an inflator in a hot trunk?
For 12V units, yes — there is nothing in them that summer heat damages, and our EPAuto has spent two years doing exactly that. Units with built-in lithium batteries are the exception: sustained high heat ages cells faster, so a self-contained pump lives better in the cabin than in a black trunk in July.
How often should I check it?
Twice a year, when you change the clocks. Plug it in, run it for thirty seconds, and confirm the gauge still agrees with a stick gauge. If it has a built-in battery, top the charge at the same time — a flat cell is the single most common reason an emergency inflator fails on the day.
Can these inflate a completely flat tire?
Yes, if the tire is still seated on the rim, but it takes far longer than our 28→36 PSI test: figure fifteen minutes or more on the Slime, and a cool-down pause on any 12V unit with a ten-minute duty cycle. A tire that has unseated from the bead needs a shop, not a trunk pump.
Do I need a plug kit as well?
If you want a real fix rather than a stopgap, yes. A plug kit costs about as much as a fast-food lunch and repairs a tread puncture permanently enough to drive on. Keep it with the inflator, since neither one is much use alone.
