Find and fix a slow tire leak

One tire that needs air every week or two is not a maintenance routine, it's a leak — and it will keep getting worse. The good news is that the most common cause is a valve core worth less than a coffee, and finding it takes soapy water and twenty minutes. The bad news is that a small number of leaks are sidewall or bead damage, which no plug kit can legitimately repair. This guide separates the two.

Is it actually a leak?

Two things masquerade as leaks. The first is temperature: pressure moves about 1 PSI per 10 °F, so a tire set to 35 PSI on a 70 °F afternoon reads 32 on a 40 °F morning with nothing wrong at all. Every tire on the car drops together when that happens — a single low tire is a different story. The seasonal version of this is covered in winter tire pressure.

The second is a gauge you shouldn't trust. Built-in inflator gauges on our bench ranged from ±0.5 PSI to 4 PSI high, and a gauge that reads inconsistently will invent a leak that isn't there. The working threshold: losing more than about 2 PSI a week, in one tire, with the others steady, is a leak. Losing 1 PSI a month is normal permeation through the rubber. Note the pattern: two of the seven are five-minute fixes, and one of those two accounts for a large share of every "mystery" slow leak we've chased. Start there.

The hunt, step by step

  1. Overinflate slightly. Pump the tire to about 10 PSI above placard — 45 PSI on a typical car tire. That is well within the sidewall maximum and makes a small leak bubble far more obviously. Bleed it back to spec at the end; there is no harm in the interim, as can you overinflate a tire explains.
  2. Mix the solution. A generous squirt of dish soap in a spray bottle of warm water. It should feel slippery, not just soapy. Kids' bubble solution works even better if you have it.
  3. Test the valve first. Cap off, spray the valve directly, and watch for five full seconds. A slow bubble growing out of the centre of the valve is a leaking core. Bubbles at the base of the stem where it meets the rim are a stem or sensor-seal problem.
  4. Work the tread systematically. Soak the tread in overlapping bands and rotate the wheel a quarter turn at a time. Look for a growing dome of foam rather than fizz — fizz is just soap. Take your time; a 2 PSI-per-week leak may need ten seconds to show.
  5. Do both sidewalls and both bead lines. Spray where the tire meets the rim on the outside, then jack the car and check the inside face — inner-bead corrosion leaks are invisible from the outside and are a common false "no leak found".
  6. Mark it and decide. Circle the spot with chalk or a crayon. A tread puncture is repairable; anything in the sidewall or shoulder is not. If you find nothing at all, put a soapy dunk test on the shop's list — a full water-tank immersion finds what a spray bottle misses.

Start with the valve core — it's usually this

The valve core is the tiny brass spring-loaded insert inside the stem. It can back off over years of temperature cycling, and its rubber seal hardens with age. A valve-core tool costs almost nothing and lives in a pocket of any decent tire kit.

With the tire inflated, seat the tool on the core and turn clockwise gently. If it moves even an eighth of a turn before it snugs, you have found your leak — retest with soapy water and you're done. If it's already tight, replace it: unscrew the core (air will rush out, so be ready), fit the new one finger-tight plus a light nip with the tool, and reinflate. Plug kits vs patches

A rope plug pushed in from the outside is the roadside fix: ream the hole, coat the plug in cement, drive it in, trim it flush, reinflate. It takes ten minutes, needs no wheel removal, and holds air reliably. The tire industry's position is that it is a temporary repair, and that position is correct — a plug seals the hole but does not bond the inner liner, so moisture can still reach the steel belts.

The proper repair is a patch-plug (a "mushroom" or combination unit) installed from inside with the tire dismounted: the stem fills the injury, the patch seals the liner, and the repair is permanent. That requires a shop, costs less than most people expect, and is what you should do at the next convenient opportunity even if your plug is holding fine.

Three hard limits on any repair. The puncture must be in the crown tread, not the shoulder or sidewall. It must be no larger than about ¼ inch (6 mm). And a given injury gets repaired once — overlapping repairs, or a tire that has already been run flat, means a new tire. Aerosol sealant in a can is a get-home tool only; it makes a proper repair messier and some TPMS sensors unhappy, so use it when the alternative is being stranded, not as a fix.

What to keep in the car

A plug kit is useless without air. The pairing that turns a flat into a fifteen-minute delay is a plug kit, a valve-core tool, a decent gauge, and an inflator that starts reliably after months in a cold trunk — which is a different requirement from being fast. When it means the tire shop

Go straight to a professional if the leak is in the sidewall or shoulder, if the puncture is bigger than a nail hole, if the object went in at a shallow angle and travelled, if the tire has been driven on while flat, if the bead area is visibly corroded, or if you found nothing with soapy water and the tire still drops.
