Every fill time we publish comes from the same mounted 205/55R16 car tire, taken from 28 to 36 PSI three times with the median reported. A typical crossover tire — a 235/60R18 on a RAV4 or a CR-V — holds roughly 40% more air than that. A full-size SUV tire, say a 275/55R20 on a Tahoe or a Wagoneer, is closer to 70–80% more. Pumps do not care about tire diameter; they care about volume, so the honest way to read our bench numbers on this page is to scale them.

That is exactly what the "Est. crossover" column below does: bench time × 1.4, rounded to the nearest five seconds. If you drive something larger, add another third on top. The scaling also explains a trap: an inflator with a 10-minute duty cycle is comfortable doing four car tires and marginal doing four SUV tires from properly low pressure, because the same job now takes 40% longer of continuous running. Built-in gauges were checked against a calibrated digital reference at 20, 32, and 50 PSI, and we publish the worst deviation. Noise was measured at one meter at working pressure, and cordless units were run from full charge to empty counting complete top-ups. The SUV figures in the table are volume-scaled estimates, not separate timed runs — we would rather show you the arithmetic than pretend a crossover tire behaves like a compact car's. What PSI should an SUV run?

Whatever the placard on the driver's door jamb says, measured cold — typically 33–38 PSI for crossovers and full-size SUVs. That number is set by the vehicle maker for the vehicle's weight, not by the tire, so never inflate to the sidewall maximum. Can a cheap 12V inflator do all four SUV tires?

For a 3–4 PSI seasonal top-up, yes. From genuinely low pressure on all four, most budget units will hit their 8–15 minute duty-cycle limit partway through and need to cool down. That is not a defect, it is the design; plan for a break or buy an inflator with more airflow.

Do bigger tires need a higher max-PSI inflator?

No. SUV placard pressures sit in the same 33–38 PSI band as many cars, so a 120 PSI unit is not limiting. What bigger tires need is more CFM at working pressure, because the pump has 40% or more air to move for the same pressure change.

Should I get a truck compressor instead?
