DeWalt 20V Max inflator (DCC020IB), tested

The DCC020IB is the most useful inflator in our cordless group and not the best one, and those two facts sit together comfortably. It fills our reference 205/55R16 from 28 to 36 PSI in 1:21, runs from a 20V battery, a 12V accessory socket, or a 110V wall outlet, and carries a high-volume hose that fills a queen air mattress in 1:35 and sucks it flat again in 0:50. Against that: our bench caught the gauge reading a full PSI high at 50 PSI, which is a real mark against it on a tool that costs what this one does. If you inflate more than tires, it is the pick anyway.

Start with the drift, because it is the thing nobody else tells you. Checked against our calibrated digital reference at 20, 32, and 50 PSI, the DeWalt tracked within a PSI at the two lower checkpoints and then read one full PSI high at 50 — meaning a tire you set to 50 actually comes off the chuck at about 49. On a car at 35 PSI that error is invisible. On a light truck tire at 50, or a trailer tire at 65, it compounds in the direction of underinflation, and you should verify with a separate stick gauge. Speed is respectable rather than exceptional: 1:21 is thirteen seconds behind the M12 and thirty-two behind the M18, but it is roughly three times faster than the 12V plug-in class, which typically takes four to six minutes for the same eight-PSI fill. Six complete fills per 5Ah pack is good endurance — one full set of tires plus a spare, with margin.

The high-volume side is not marketing. The DCC020IB has a second outlet with a fat low-pressure hose, and in that mode it moves real air: 1:35 to fill a queen air mattress flat-to-firm, against 1:20 for a dedicated AC bed pump and 2:10 for the Flextail camping pump. Deflate mode — a genuine vacuum, not just an open port — pulled the same bed flat in 0:50, which is the fastest deflate we measured. That combination is why it anchors our best air mattress pumps ranking despite being, nominally, a tire tool. High-pressure and high-volume are different jobs, as explained in PSI, CFM and duty cycle, and very few tools do both honestly.

Design and usability

It is a chunky yellow box with a fold-flat handle, a rubberized base, and two hoses wrapped around dedicated retainers. Everything stows on board, including the 12V cord and the AC cord, which matters because a three-power-source tool with loose cables in a trunk becomes a two-power-source tool within a year.

The power selection is a physical switch, not a menu — flip it to the source you have. The 12V lead is long enough to reach all four wheels from a front socket on a mid-size sedan; the AC cord is short enough that you will want an extension in a garage. Running on wall power is the mode nobody mentions in reviews and the one we used most on the bench: no battery drain, no time limit, and the fill speed is identical.

Controls are a rocker for pressure and a start button, with a backlit LCD that stays readable at dusk. The auto-stop shuts off cleanly and the residual hose pressure bleeds when you unscrew the chuck rather than blasting your knuckles. Downsides: at 4.8 lb bare it is heavy for the job, the housing is bulky enough to eat real trunk space, and at 80 dB it is not a tool for a shared driveway at 6 a.m.

Who it's for — and who should skip it

This is the family-garage inflator. Buy it if you already own 20V Max batteries, if your inflation list includes air beds, pool floats, sports balls, and camping pads alongside tires, or if you want one tool that works in a driveway with no battery, in a parking lot from the car socket, and on a trailhead from a pack. Its three-source flexibility also makes it the sanest cordless choice for a household that keeps one inflator for two cars and a camper.

Who should skip it: anyone whose only job is car tires and who cares about gauge precision — the M12 is faster, lighter, and half a PSI more honest at every checkpoint. Skip it too if you need to move volume at high pressure on truck or RV tires, where the M18 or a clamp-fed portable compressor is the right class of tool, and skip it if you want something that lives in a door pocket — at 4.8 lb bare this is a trunk item. Budget-minded buyers with no DeWalt batteries should look at the under-$50 ranking instead of buying into a platform.

Versus its main rival

The M12 is the direct competitor and it wins the tire-only argument on every axis we measure: 1:08 to 1:21 on fill speed, ±0.5 to ±1.0 on gauge error, 2.6 lb to 4.8 lb on weight, 78 dB to 80 dB on noise. If those were the only numbers, this review would end differently.

What the DeWalt adds is scope. Three power sources means it never sits idle because a battery died; the volume mode means it replaces a second appliance entirely; and 160 PSI gives it headroom the 120 PSI M12 does not have. If yes, the DeWalt is worth the thirteen seconds and the extra half PSI. If no, it is not.
